The number of paychecks in a year depends on pay frequency. This matters for budgeting, converting annual salary into paycheck amounts and estimating payroll deductions.

Paychecks per year by pay frequency

ScheduleTypical checksHow it works
Weekly52Usually one check each week
Biweekly26Usually every 14 days
Semi-monthly24Usually twice per month
Monthly12Usually once per month

Why biweekly pay can occasionally produce 27 checks

A calendar year is slightly longer than exactly 52 weeks. Depending on payroll timing and the day of the first payday, some years can contain an extra biweekly payroll date. Employers handle that situation in different ways, so use your actual payroll calendar when exact annual withholding matters.

How to calculate gross pay per check

For a fixed annual salary, divide salary by the number of regular pay periods. A $65,000 salary divided by 26 is $2,500 gross per biweekly check. Dividing the same salary by 24 gives about $2,708.33 gross per semi-monthly check.

Budgeting with paycheck frequency

Biweekly workers sometimes treat three-paycheck months as an opportunity for savings or debt payoff. Semi-monthly workers usually receive two checks every month, which can make monthly budgeting more predictable.
